What a Typical Session Looks Like
Every mentor runs their sessions a little differently, but most conversations follow a structure like this.
First 10 minutes — Getting oriented
You'll discuss where you are in your styling journey, the kind of work you want to do, and the challenges you're currently facing.
Next 20 minutes — Portfolio & aesthetic review
Your mentor will review your styling work, mood boards, or recent shoots and give direct feedback on your taste level, visual identity, and how your work is presented.
Next 20 minutes — Industry strategy
You may discuss assisting established stylists, building relationships with photographers and brands, editorial vs commercial work, and how stylists actually get hired.
Last 10 minutes — Clarifying direction
You'll use the final part of the session to reflect on the discussion and clarify a few areas you may want to focus on next.

Biography
Ian McRae is a New York based fashion stylist, creative consultant, and cultural image maker whose work sits at the intersection of style, storytelling, and identity. He has built a reputation in the fashion world for his distinct visual language that reinterprets masculine and feminine archetypes through texture, color, silhouette, and cultural references. His approach treats style as worldbuilding, using clothing and imagery not just to dress a subject but to convey deeper narratives and emotional context.
McRae’s styling work has appeared in editorial and commercial campaigns for high profile clients and publications. He has worked with US Vogue, GQ Middle East, Nike, Adidas, Fantastic Man, Just Smile Magazine, Present Space, and Levi’s, among others. His portfolio spans influential fashion editorials and brand storytelling that blur the lines between culture, art, and commerce.
Originally from Tallahassee, Florida, McRae moved to New York to immerse himself in a creative community and refine his craft. He began his professional journey assisting established stylists before emerging as a sought after creative lead with more than a decade of industry experience. Publications and industry observers note his thoughtful integration of nostalgia, youth culture, and subcultural aesthetics into contemporary fashion contexts.
Beyond his commercial work, McRae is recognized as a voice for more intentional, inclusive creativity in fashion. He has spoken publicly about using fashion to support emerging designers, broaden representation, and challenge how the industry perceives narrative and identity through clothing.
